My Hostel Life and The Life in Garden City

Source: Housing
That was way back. I just finished my BSc Final exam. That time I was decided to get ready for the State Administrative exam and was enquiring about that. My Father one day told me why you don’t consider higher studies, you will have better chance in Administrative exam after the Masters in terms of knowledge and maturity. His advice knocked me and after a long time thinking I had decided to pursue for higher studies.

From a small town and without knowing proper language (Including English and Kanada) it was difficult to survive in Bangalore. I got admission in a small collage with a nice Lab. The students in our collage mostly like us, means from middle class background though all were not good in English as well in Hindi. We had students from every part of India, from Assam to Gujarat and Haryana to Kerala. We were allotted a newly built Hostel that was my dream hostel. It was twin sharing room and toilets and bathroom were separate. Initial days the hostel was clean, although toilets were not good after 7 AM in morning.

There was one more problem in the hostel that was Hot water. We came from tropical climate area where most of time weather was hot and humid but here the climate was bit chilly and to get bath in morning we definitely needed hot water. There was a boiler in the hostel which very often not functioning which led to a big chaos as all need hot water.
Next thing I should talk about the food. As everyone know the hostel food in every parts of India were pathetic. When we came to the new hostel that time there was no I house cooking facility. There was cooking place in Ladies hostel which was 4-5 KM from Hostel and the food was carried to our hostel by a Omni. Most of the time they used to prepare Tandoori Roti which became a rubber till the time it reached to hostel. So the complain started pouring to the hostel warden and as usual he was not taking any initiatives to start in-house cooking facility. We were about 40 students in the hostel and decided to write a complain letter to Chairman of the trust after tolerating pathetic food in 2-3 months time. We wrote the complain and went to meet the chairman. After listening our concern he decided to visit the hostel and inspect the food and also told us if he would find our complain true then he would start canteen in our hostel. After a sudden visit in the hostel, the chairman approved to start in-house canteen in our hostel. In the same time they had changed the warden. After he joined our hostel we used to get hot chapatti and sabji, also rice, sambar, dal and other items.
Another great thing about our hostel was a small lawn which was our cricket play ground. The lawn was not 22 yards, it was merely 18 yards. All the sides were blocked so we were not able to hit hard but could defend our wickets though bowlers were able to bowl in horrific speed. The plastic chair was our wickets, no runs only 4, 1 and 2 if the ball went pass the bowler and hit the end wall. On side wall was 1 runs and Off side was 2. It was really great entertainment for us and made our life full of joy. After we come back from the college at 4.30PM, our main motto was to play cricket after having tea and snacks.

After our hostel life we faced too much problem in staying in flats and rooms. It was not so enjoyable like our hostel. All the rooms and flats were not properly maintained. In that time we were not having Housing.com to find best house in preferred locality within our budget.
My decision to come to Bangalore for higher study proved to be right. Due to the education here I am able to go on in the professional world. Although staying here far from my parents were not so easy, coping in English medium environment was not at all easy for a small town guy but with the help of God, support of my parents, my college and nice hostel environment I was able to complete my Master with First class.
